Itinerary description
Since early 20th century, the grove was the favorite naturalist destination of residents of Neapolis, as the water turned the area to a small paradise. The wooded area, the gurgling water and the scenic mills still compose a wonderful setting.
The area is a remarkable place of beauty in the dry region of north Mirabello and its important biodiversity has raised the ecological interest and aesthetic value of the area. The vegetation is typical of the Cretan limestone grounds, but is highly developed due to the abundance of water. It consists of high shrubs, trees and large platans, oaks, cypresses, olive groves, lemon trees and several endemic plants.

Ispitas monastery
The Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ (Metamorphosis) in Nispitas area, is located 4km southwest of Neapolis. The monastery was deserted during the Turkish occupation of Crete and only the church has survived until today. Around the chapel there are some ruins of the old monastery complex. The monastery, celebrating on August 6th, was built during the Venetian Era, probably after 1553, next to the the village of Nispitas. The church is arch-vaulted and is supported by buttresses. The walls of the church are covered with some amazing stone carvings, typical of the Venetian period. Moreover, the frescoes of the church did not survive the Turkish Era, but they are mentioned in very old documents.
