Itinerary description
A volcano hike of a different kind.
The Vulkaneifel is one of the most visited areas of the Eifel. Not that you would find fire-and-lava-spitting volcanoes here, but this part of the Eifel has a volcanic origin. It is best seen by the 'Maare', which are lakes in the old craters of volcanoes. Their story is in fact a little more complicated, and we suggest you visit the area and study some of the many signboards that explain everything in detail. Maar is dialect for 'Meer' and in this area means as much as a lake.
The area is rich in mineral waters, and there are countless plants that bottle the fizzy waters. Aside from all this geo-physical interest, the area is simply beautiful and many hikers' favorite.
In this hike we explore three of the Maares that sit close to each other, near the town of Daun. We extend the hike to include a part of the 'Lieserpfad'. The Lieser-trail follows the Lieser-stream, and at least one hiking book author believes it must be the most attractive trail on earth. Check for yourself.
There are many interesting sights along the way, including the Dronketurm from which good views are to be had all around. Dronke was the Gentleman who founded the 'Eifelverein' - the Eifel hikers association.
Waypoint 1, also a parking place, is an alternative start.
Note that the Üdersdorfer Mühle, half way between way point 14 and 15, also provides refreshments and simple meals. We didn't know, and had just finished our break, but you may plan for a stop here.
Fall is an excellent time to visit, though we believe it is very worthwhile any time of the year.
The trail is similar to Tour 57 of the 2014 Kompass guide.
