Volcán Santa Maria

Il est possible de faire l'ascension du volcan Santa Maria sans guide depuis Quetzaltenango (Xela).
Depuis le centre ville, se rendre à l'église du Calvaire où un chicken bus passe souvent. Il passe du Sud au Nord seulement : il fait une boucle et non un aller-retour. Donc à l'aller on a eu l'impression de partir dans le mauvais sens mais pas du tout. Restez dans le chicken bus jusqu'au terminal Llano del pinal.
Nous avons fait l'ascension samedi 11 décembre 2021 et le sentier était très emprunté par des familles ou des groupes d'amis. À la descente, nous avons croisé de nombreux groupes avec des tentes, duvet et nourriture. Le sommet semble être bien occupé et le lieu de festivités et rituels religieux les samedi soirs.
Nous sommes arrivés à l'arrêt de bus à 7:20 et en bas du chemin à 8h. Ensuite l'ascension s'est révélée physique. La trace GPS de mon enregistrement n'est pas terrible mais le chemin est facile à suivre. Le balisage est rouge, il y a un seul croisement. À gauche le volcan et à droite une ascension plus douce vers un mirador. Suivre donc le sentier de gauche. Après trois heures d'effort, nous voilà en haut. On a la chance d'assister à l'éjection d'un fumerolles du cratère Santiaguito, un peu en dessous du cratère du Santa Maria. Cela semble être assez courant. La descente est assez facile comme le temps est sec et nous demande un peu plus de 2heures.

1 pull, 1 casquette et de bonnes chaussures. La matin le gel était encore bien présent mais vers midi il fait déjà bien chaud !

It is possible to climb the Santa Maria volcano without any guide from Quetzaltenango (Xela).
From the city center, go to the Church "Iglesia del Calvario". There you can take a chicken bus. It goes from South to North only: it makes a loop and not a round trip. So on the way, I thought I took the bus in in the wrong way but not at all. Stay on the chicken bus until the Llano del pinal terminal.
We made the climb on Saturday December 11, 2021 and the trail was also used by families or groups of friends : this made a very nice vide. On the way down, we passed many groups with tents, sleeping bags and food. The summit seems to be busy and the place of religious festivities and rituals on Saturday evenings.
We got to the bus stop at 7:20 am and down the path at 8am. Then the ascent turned out to be physical. The GPS track of my recording is poor, but the path is easy to follow. The markup is red, there is only one crossing. To the left the volcano and to the right a smoother ascent to a viewpoint. So follow the left path. After three hours of effort, here we are arrived at the top : 3770m of altitud. We have the chance to witness the ejection of a fumarole from the Santiaguito, below the crater of Santa Maria. It seems to be quite common. The descent is quite easy as the weather is dry and takes a little more than 2 hours.
