Itinerary description
We reached Tambillo by bus, then another bus to Amaguaña, where we took a "cooperativa" taxi that took us to the Refugio de Vida Silvestre Pasochoa for USD6 (January 2015) The Centre is free for all visitors, and there are camping facilitiies, nice and clean buildings and paths.
The first part of the trek is through a forest that is in the valley formed by the explosion of the chamber of the volcano through the north-west. The forest finishes once you reach the top of the rigde, then you basically follow it up towards the top of the crater.
Eventually and not far from the top there is an almost vertical wall of rock. The obvious path is towards the right of the wall, but we were advised to take left side of the wall, through a forest, then up to leave the wall behind. Back on top of the ridge, you will see a summit, that we climbed but this was one of the main ones, so we have to scramble a bit down to reach the parth and climb to the first of the 2 main peaks of the crater from the west.
This one is the second highest summit, and the highest is not really far away and seems to be quite easy to reach, but time was not on our side and we decided to go down back to the Pasochoa Wildlife Centre following the same way, except in going up to first small summit that we climbed thingking it was the main one.
Even if this is not one of the highest volcanoes in the area, it is a very recommended climb, and quite tough as well.
