Itinerary description
Vitosha is a mountain massif on the outskirts of Sofia as well as the the oldest nature park in the Balkans. The highest point of the whole range is called Cherni Vrah (literally the "Black Peak"), an enormous cone shaped peak at 2290 meters above sea level offering circular views of Rila as well as of the whole Srednogorie (roughly translated as the "Middlemountains") mountain chain system.
There're numerous hiking trails to get to the summit and the entry points located at the southern suburbs of Sofia are easily accessible by municipal bus lines. There's also a system of the chairlifts that can effortlessly take you to the upper parts of the mountain but it hasn't been operating by the time we did the hike and appeared to be pretty rundown (but I suppose that at least some of the chairlifts would be operating during the winter season).
All in all, Vitosha is an excellent opportunity for a serious yet not too demanding day hike for anybody staying in Sofia.
