SELECTION OF PHOTOS OF THE ROUTE

Route 76: Walk through Viscri

Recreation Google Earth

Our trip to Romania is full of contrasts: from the luxury of Sinaia, to the prosperity of a walled city like Braşov or the charm of a medieval citadel in Sighișoara. But to get to Viscri we meet another Romania that still travels by horse-drawn carts. It is really shocking that they continue to coexist with the infinity of luxury cars that circulate on the same road and even more so knowing that until ten years ago you could only reach the town with your own means of locomotion, and with roads in very poor condition, such as we see on its main street.

Viscri's entrance

We leave the car at the entrance to the town, which runs along a single large street. On each side we see the old houses of the German settlers who built houses in the same style in an orderly manner. Today, many of them have been converted into restaurants, where you can taste traditional Romanian cuisine. But what is curious is the personal style of their houses, where the facades seem to have a curious look, formed by two small windows as an eye and another round one that looks like a nose.

Houses of Viscri

Although it was the Szekler people who first settled on these lands, it was the Saxon settlers who defended the southeastern border of the Hungarian kingdom. They built a fortress around a small chapel located on a small knoll and developed it with their God as a reference within the walls that surrounded it. .

Viscri Fortress

Currently the fortress is a kind of museum where they show countless objects from a more or less recent past: from ceramics, farm tools, utensils of daily life, documents or one of the most archaic costumes of the 18th century. It is to enter the fortress and it seems that you return to the 18th century, especially since the floor is made of wood that creaks with every step you take. Without a doubt, a singularity in time.

Interior of the evangelical church

Outside the fortress is the cemetery where you can see tombstones carved in the year 1100. Interestingly, as we have seen in other cities, there is great respect for the different beliefs of its inhabitants and despite the fact that Viscri is a A small town with less than 500 inhabitants, it has another church, but in this case Orthodox, with the typical image of Christ on the cross at its entrance.

Holy Trinity Church

The last few meters take us down the same main road from where we started. There we see curious fountains or even a bucolic well, but what catches our attention is the figure of a bear that surely lives in the dense forests of this part of the country. Who knows if we will see a real one! ... Until next time

Viscri

Viscri is a village in the Bunești commune in Brașov County, Transylvania. It is a settlement located on the Transylvanian plateau, originally inhabited by the Szekler, then colonized by the Saxons in the 12th century. XIII. It currently preserves a beautiful fortified evangelical church, in the style of the fortified Saxon churches in Transylvania. Located between the two highways that connect Rupea with Sighișoara, Bunești and Mediaș, until ten years ago the village of Viscri could only be reached by own means of locomotion. It is a town that remained in the 18th century... only electricity and the telephone took over from civilization. It is isolated from the world, but it is the center of attention, because this is where Prince Charles bought his house and became the main sponsor of a foundation that is dedicated to saving the Saxon towns. Due to its secluded position, the most archaic costume of the 17th-19th centuries is preserved here. Around the year 1100, the Szeklers lived on these lands, defenders of the southeastern border of the Hungarian kingdom. 100 years later they were moved to the foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, and in their place were taken by the Saxons, who built a fortress around the small inherited chapel. In Viscri they still have that well-preserved Saxon peasant fortress, which includes within its walls one of the few 13th-century Romanesque hall churches. The remote position of the settlement also explains its relatively late appearance in the documents. Around 1500, Viscri is listed among the free municipalities of the See of Rupea, with 51 houses, three shepherds, one teacher and two poor. As in other municipalities, the church age confirms that the settlement of German settlers occurred at the end of the 12th century when the western part of the future seat of Rupa was also colonized. The Saxon community suffered greatly under the communist dictatorship, which is why from 1989 the mass emigration of Saxons to their country of origin Germany began. But those who remained here, with the financial help of those who left, began the restoration and conservation of the buildings that remained after their presence on the territory of our country. This is what the Mihai Eminescu Trust Foundation pursues, which is not by chance located right in Viscri.

Six towers rise above the crown of the white walls, the oldest being the church tower, whose 2.3m walls were built in the 13th century. The 1650 Gate Tower houses the bells. The oval fortification with a height of 5-7 m was built in the s. XII. With the development of the community, the chapel was also enlarged and fortified in the 16th century. In the 18th century, another defensive wall was built, only partially visible, since the citadel lost its defensive function in the 19th century, and underwent some changes.
