An easy walk in the largest park of Rome
Trail highlights:
- City park with 17th century villa
- Botanical collection and monumental trees
- Beautiful lake with lots of birds
Between the districts of Monteverde and Aurelio is located the largest city park of Rome. The garden was designed by the sculptor Alessandro Algardi when the land owner, Giovanni Battista Pamphilj was elected Pope under the name of Innocenzo X. Alessandro Algardi gave his name to the Casino Algardi (aka Villa Nuova, aka Casino delle Allegrezze). The trail also includes a visit to the Basilica di San Pancrazio, a 5th century church with extensive catacombs under it.
Practical information (updated to September 2019):
- Starting and ending points: the circle trail begins end end in Piazza di San Pancrazio. This point can by reched by bus, with lines 44 (direction Montalcini, departure from Via del Teatro di Marcello, stop Ottavilla / Pamphilj), 870 (direction Trullo, departure from Via Paola, stop Vitellia / San Pancrazio), 871 (circle line, departure from Stazione Trastevere, stop Fonteiana / Ottavilla) or 982 (direction Stazione Quattro Venti, departure from Viale XVII Olimpiade, stop Piazza San Pancrazio).
- Basilica di San Pancrazio:
WARNING: during the celebrations it's not allowed to visit the church.
Opening hours: weekdays: 8.30-12.00 / 16.30-19.00 (from July to September open till 19.30); holidays: 8.00-13.00 / 16.30-20.00.
Holy masses: weekdays: 9.00, 18.00; holidays: 8.30, 10.30, 12.00, 17.00, 19.00.
Ticket: free.
The Catacombs are currently colsed for restoration.
