It is far better to have no affectionate companions.
Since I have no pride and egotism,
I do not look for fame and glory.
First I do not suffer
Because of seeking them;
Then I do not suffer
In trying to preserve them;
In the end I do not suffer
For fear of losing them.
It is far better to have no fame nor glory.
Since I have no desire for any place,
I crave not to be here, or there.
First I do not worry
About my home's protection;
Then I do not suffer
From a fervent passion for it;
In the end I am not anxious to defend it.
It is far better to have no home nor land.

With great faith in Milarepa, the envoy went back to the King of Ye
Rang and Ko Kom and informed him in detail about the Jetsun. Then
the King's faith and reverence were also confirmed. He said to the en-
voy, "Go and see whether you can persuade him to come here. If he
does not accept the invitation, you may offer him this cloth of Ka Shi
Ka and also this supreme drug, Ahrura."
Accordingly, the envoy went back to Milarepa and said, "I was sent
by the King of Ye Rang and Ko Kom, a ruler with great faith in the
Dharma, to invite you, the Tibetan Yogi, to come to his country." Mila-
repa replied, "In general, I do not look up to people and do not stay in
cities; in particular, I do not know how to entertain kings, nor do I need
good food or worldly pleasures. It is not mere words or a myth that a
man practicing the Dharma should be indifferent to hunger and cold,
and should hold the knife-of-starving to his death. You, envoy of the
King, rna} return to your country. I will follow the order of my Guru,
Marpa, to meditate in solitude." The envoy then said to the Jetsun, "So
be it, if you insist. But would it not be a sorry case indeed that a great
king, having sent a special envoy to fetch a common yogi, got nothing
back but the return of his own envoy's empty hands and thorn-pricked
feet?" To this the Jetsun replied, "I am the great Universal Emperor.
There is no other emperor who is happier, richer, and more powerful
than I." The envoy retorted, "If you claim that you are the great Uni

versa] Emperor himself, then you must have the Seven Precious Articles
of Royalty. 1 Please show me one of them." The Jetsun replied, "If you
worldly kings and officers will follow my Royal Way, each of you may
also become the Supreme Emperor, and thus be rich and noble." Where-
upon he sang:
If you kings and courtiers who seek pleasures,
Follow the Royal Succession of Milarepa,
Eventually you will obtain them.
This is the Royal Succession of Milarepa:
My faith is the Royal Precious Wheel
Revolving around the Virtues day and night.
My wisdom is the Royal Precious Gem
Fulfilling all the wishes of the self and others.
The observance of discipline is my Royal Precious
Queen;
She is my adornment, one most beautiful.
Meditation is my Royal Precious Minister;
With him I accumulate the Two Provisions! 2
Self-respect is my Royal Precious Elephant,
Which takes responsibility for the Buddhist Dharma.
Diligence is my Royal Precious Horse,
Which bears the Klesas to Non-ego Land.
Study-and-contemplation is my Royal Precious General,
Who destroys the enemy of vicious thoughts.
If you have these Royal Precious Trappings,
You will gain a king's fame and prosperity,
And conquer all your foes.
You then may spread the Ten Virtues in your dominion,
And urge all mother-like sentient beings
To follow my noble teachings.
"This is indeed the tradition of Dharma," cried the envoy. "It is truly
wonderful. If you insist upon not coming with me, I have here two
precious things to offer you. They are sent by my King; one is the cloth
of Ka Shi Ka, and the other is the supreme drug, Ahrura."
The Jetsun accepted these two gifts and then duly offered good w
