Itinerary description
General info: the Via is extremely well labeled, there are always a couple of stickers almost every time you raise your eyes. Avoid hot summers for this route, there are some long ways in open fields that under the sun can be a challenge itself alone. There are plenty of places to eat, sleep, and rest across the journey. Be sure to buy the "Credentials" where you can place your stamps along the journey. Have some spare cash with you to support with small donations when needed. If it's raining, or had rained few days before, expect a LOT of mud, be sure to have poles with you and lots of patience.
The first stage (day) it's something you can avoid and you won't miss much: you can start at Altopascio. The stage 3 and 4 (day 3 and day 4) are instead one of the most beautiful landscapes you can ask the Francigena, be sure to not miss them and plan them, if you can, with good weather.
---
Day1: From the train station, head north into the walled city of Lucca. You can take the Credentials just outside the train station, or at the museum of the cathedral. You can wander in the city, and when you're ready to start the journey, exit via Porta Elisa and follow directions. The route is 99% asphalt, so be prepared for that. You'll pass through many towns and villages, be sure to stop at the SS Quirico and Giulutta at Capannori, the Chiesa Madre di San Giusto at Porcari and, lastly, at the Montepascio historical center.
Warn: GPS recording is inaccurate the first 15km. Total elevation gain is close to 0, almost full asphalt.
