Waypoints
Rudnik – peak
Rudnik is a pronounced forested hill above Tršće, in a little known but very picturesque northern part of Gorski kotar. On the eastern slope of Rudnik, the Croatian Forests company built two ski runs and a ski lift, with the restaurant Brvnara at the base. The peak itself is a flat meadow above the ski runs. The peak point is marked with a cylinder with the seal and a plate on a tree 20 meters away. Even though the peak is covered in grass, the view from the peak is obstructed by the surrounding trees. However, there is a nice view of Tršće from the ski slopes. Despite its name (Rudnik meaning Mine), there have never been mines on the mountain, nor are there any ores. In the hamlet of Frbežari in Tršće, there is a mountain hut managed by the mountaineering society PD Kamenjak, which can serve as accommodation facility for hikers. In the winter period, Tršće turns into a ski center. In the summertime, hunting and hunting tourism are prominent activities in the area. / View: One prominent feature on the horizon viewed from the peak is Snežnik in Slovenia. / Seal: Seal is in the cylinder in the middle of the peak meadow, and the marking of the peak is on the dominant tree on the edge of the meadow. The metal seal is also on the peak.
Mountain lodge Schlosserov dom
Mountain lodge Schlosserov dom is located on a mountain pass between the peak of Veliki Risnjak and the southern peak of Mali Risnjak, on the meadow of Schlosserova livada. The facility is named after dr. Josip Schlosser Klekovski, the first president of the Croatian Mountaineering Society (HPD) and the founder of Croatian botany. At the ground level, there is a winter room, kitchen, premises of the person on duty, toilet facilities and a spacious dining area. Upstairs, there are rooms with beds, and a joint dormitory in the attic.
Risnjak – peak
Veliki Risnjak is one of the most picturesque Croatian peaks – the second highest peak in Gorski kotar, 6 meters lower than Bjelolasica. In 1952, an inscription in the memory of Mr. Schlosser and Mr. Vukotinović, researches of Risnjak nature, was carved into the peak rock. The entire area of Risnjak is characterized by abundant and diverse flora and by an interesting animal world. It is protected as a national park. / View: The peak offers views on all sides. Hikers can enjoy an excellent view of the bay of Rijeka, Krk, Učka, Ćićarija, Snježnik, Slovenian Snežnik, Lokvarsko jezero, Bjelolasica and Velebit. One can also see the facility Schlosserov dom on the pass below the peak. / Seal: Metal seal is located on the peak. The seal stamped in the facility Schlosserov dom is not recognized.
Viševica – peak
Viševica is a conical peak quite special among numerous peaks in the area due to its appearance and height. The slopes below the peak are steep and forested. There is no forest on the peak itself, so hikers can enjoy views of the surroundings as they reach the meadow at the peak. Despite its beauty, Viševica is relatively rarely visited by hikers, since all classic approaches are relatively steep and long. / View: Given the fact that Viševica is similarly distant from Velebit, Bjelolasica, Bijele stijene, Risnjak, Učka and the peaks of the northern Adriatic islands, visitors reaching the Viševica peak have a feeling of standing in the middle of a huge natural amphitheater. / Seal: Seal of the peak is in the metal box on the peak.
Burni Bitoraj – peak Bitoraj
Samarske stijene – peak
The peak of Samarske stijene is located in the western group of the rocks of Samarske stijene. The peak is a rocky head rising out of the forest. The area of Samarske stijene consists of approximately twenty groups of white rocks. Unlike Bijele stijene, this area is not characterized by a pronounced ridge or thin and elegant shapes. The rocks are conical and large, with series of cracks. Sinkholes are mostly covered in mixed forest, and fir and spruce trees rising to the peaks give the entire area extraordinary picturesque character. / View: The peak offers a view of the southern group of rocks; view to other sides is limited by forest. / Seal: Box with the register book and the rubber seal is on the peak, as well as the metal seal of the peak.
Bijele stijene – peak
The peak of Bijele stijene is a huge rock with vertical sides. In the area of Bijele stijene, nature has created a gallery of karst forms: numerous vertical white rocks approximately fifty meters high, and deep impassable sinkholes and abysses with eternal snow at the bottom. The ridge with the rocky peaks is well known to hikers despite being difficult to pass. However, below the ridge, there are still sections completely unexplored. The area of Bijele stijene and Samarske stijene is protected as a strict nature reserve. / View: The peak offers a wonderful view of Bjelolasica and Klek, and of numerous white rocky peaks in the surroundings. / Seal: Metal seal is built into the rock on
Kolovratske stijene – peak
Kolovratske stijene is a series of rocks south of the groups of Samarske stijene and Bijele stijene. This site is a solitary ridge on the very edge of Velika Kapela, where its slopes start descending towards the sea. The rocky peak area of the ridge of Kolovratske stijene is approx. 1 kilometer long. The peak area consists of two rocky peaks rising above the forest. The western peak is 1099 meters above sea level, and the eastern peak is at 1090 m.a.s.l. The eastern peak, with mountaineering markings leading to it, is an impressive rock 15 meters high, with wonderful views of Duliba and the mountain hut Stalak, and also of Velika Javornica. There is no marked access to the higher, western peak. / View: The site of Kolovratske stijene offers an excellent view of the forests of Gorski kotar and of the sea in the distance. / Seal: Metal seal is built into the rock, next to the route of the Kapela Hiking Trail.
Balinovac – peak
Balinovac is a rocky peak in the Zavižan group of peaks, its southwestern part enclosing the Botanical Garden in Modrić dolac. Despite the relatively low elevation compared to the nearby peak Veliki Zavižan, the peak of Balinovac, due to its rocks, looks impressive when viewed from the Botanical Garden. Since the peak offers a view towards the sea, it is an attractive hiking destination. A climb to Balinovac is also interesting due to the fact that it begins in the Velebit Botanical Garden. This garden was established in 1966 by professor Fran Kušan, a botanist and mountaineer from Zagreb. A loop trail that begins at the small wooden hut enables visitors to see hundreds of plant species in half an hour of walking, including the endemic species of Velebit. / View: The peak offers a view of the sea, but also of all the peaks of the Zavižan group. / Seal: Metal seal is on the peak rock.
Gromovača – peak
Gromovača is the highest peak of Rožanski kukovi. The peak itself is rocky, but it does not leave the impression of being particularly high. A visit to Gromovača is interesting also due to the fact that the approach to the peak gives visitors the opportunity to see the most beautiful section of the Premužić Trail – a longitudinal trail constructed from Zavižan to Baške Oštarije, 57 kilometers long, passing through the most beautiful and the least accessible areas of Velebit. The section of the Premužić Trail passing through the otherwise completely inaccessible karst area of Rožanski kukovi is particularly impressive – clearly showing why this trail is rightly considered a genuine masterpiece of construction. / View: Gromovača is the best viewpoint of the magnificent stone labyrinth of Rožanski kukovi. A view of the sea is extraordinary too, and the peak also offers a view of the mountain lodge Zavižan in the distance. / Seal: Metal seal is built into the peak, a couple of meters east of the peak point.
Krajačev kuk – peak
Krajačev kuk is clearly visible as an impressive presence in the southern area of Rožanski kukovi. It consists of two pronounced peaks attracting attention of hikers along the Premužić Trail with their picturesque nature and position. Krajačev kuk was named after Ivan Krajač, president of the Croatian Mountaineering Society, who first described the peak, and who, in his capacity as minister in the government of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, ensured funds needed for the construction of the tourist trail along the peak area of Velebit based on the design by Ante Premužić. / View: Krajačev kuk offers a wonderful view of all the peaks of Rožanski kukovi and Hajdučki kukovi, and also of Veliki Kozjak. / Seal: Metal seal is on the peak.
Zečjak – peak
Zečjak is a magnificent peak and a superb viewpoint due to its position, grassland slopes and a pleasant route leading along the ridge to the peak. / View: The peak offers wide views of the Adriatic, from Učka to the area of Ravni kotari near the city of Zadar. Peaks of the northern and central areas of Velebit are also clearly seen, as well as a wide area of the region of Lika / Seal: Metal seal is built into the peak.
Budakovo brdo – peak
Budakovo brdo is a picturesque mountain ridge in the center of central Velebit. It is completely covered in grass in its top area, and thus recognizable from afar. The wider area of Budakovo brdo is one of the four known habitats of the famous plant species Velebit degenia. / View: Given its position and height, the peak offers views of both the littoral and the mainland side of Velebit. / Seal: Box with the register book is on the peak, and metal seal is welded to the post below the box. /
Bačić kuk – peak
Bačić kuk is the highest and the northernmost rocky peak in the sharp range of peaks called Dabarski kukovi. The peak area itself is very narrow, and the climb to Bačić kuk is demanding. / View: The peak is shaped as a small elongated stone ridge, and it offers an incredible view of Dabarski kukovi – a series of rocky peaks rising out of the green forest like a wall of sorts, extending to the southeast towards Baške Oštarije. / Seal: The final part of the climb is demanding, so the seal of the peak is located in a karst valley enclosed by rocks 10 minutes of hiking below the peak, accessible to every hiker. This is where the metal seal is also located.
Mountain shelter Ždrilo
Mountain shelter Ždrilo is a beautiful and modern mountain shelter in the immediate vicinity of Piskovita kosica, and an important facility on the longitudinal Velebit Hiking Trail. The shelter consists of one functional room with a stove, table with benches, and beds for overnight stay. The shelter was designed by architect Ivan Juretić.
Veliki Stolac – peak
Veliki Stolac is the highest peak in the littoral series of peaks rising above Šugarska duliba on the eastern side. A climb to this peak is an excellent add-on to a visit to Šugarska duliba – a wide karst valley behind the first littoral series of peaks. A small section of the wider area of Veliki Stolac is one of the four known habitats of the endemic plant species Velebit degenia. In Šugarska duliba, there is a metal container serving as mountain shelter (ruins of a forest ranger station and a water cistern with potable water are 300 meters away from the shelter). / View: The peak offers an excellent panoramic view of the sea, including the island of Pag in its entire length. / Seal: Metal seal is built into the rock on the peak.
Debeli kuk at Stap – peak
Despite its height, relatively modest for Velebit, Debeli kuk is an extraordinarily nice viewpoint, with a wide view oriented towards the sea. The peak is located slightly northwest of the wide plateau of Stap with the mountain shelter Tatekova koliba, and north of the site called kamen Čučavac. The area between Visočica and the peak area above Paklenica is not characterized by high peaks, and the main hiking destinations are oriented to the littoral side of the mountain. This karst terrain includes an interesting series of several wide forested valleys and large karst fields that served for livestock grazing until the second half of the 20th century. / View: The peak offers a beautiful view of the wide southern area of Velebit and of the sea and the island of Pag. / Seal: Seal is on the rock below the peak (on the edge of the meadow and the rock), 5 minutes of hiking below the peak. The metal seal is on the rock on the peak, opposite to the metal cylinder.
Mountain shelter Zavrata
Mountain shelter Zavrata is located at the northwestern edge of a solitary karst field of Zavrata, near Malo Rujno. This old shepherd's dwelling has been converted into a simple mountain shelter.
Bojinac – peak Bojin kuk
Bojin kuk is the highest peak of Bojinac – an area of unusually picturesque rocky limestone peaks. The best testimony to the beauty of Bojinac is the fact that the borders of the Paklenica National Park have been enlarged in order to encompass Bojinac as a separate unit to the west. Even though Bojinac is amazingly picturesque, it is worth bearing in mind that the ascent to the highest peak called Bojin kuk is rather demanding, so it is not recommended to inexperienced hikers. / View: The peak offers a wonderful view of the sea and of the wide plateau of Veliko Rujno and Malo Rujno. However, the surrounding vertical rocky peaks of Bojinac are what captures attention the most. Views from Bojin kuk are among the most beautiful views of the southern area of Velebit. / Seal: Metal seal is on the peak.
Mountain lodge Paklenica
Mountain lodge Paklenica is a beautiful two-storey facility with two wings, located at the beginning of the Velika Paklenica canyon. The ground level made of masonry includes dining area and kitchen, and the wooden upper level has dormitories with 40 beds. In front of the lodge, there is a spacious terrace for resting, with the creek of Paklenica flowing past. The facility is located in the bottom of the valley, at the confluence of creeks Paklenica and Brezimenjača.
Mountain shelter Struge
Mountain shelter Struge is located in the central part of the area of Struge, approx. 10 minutes of hiking away from the water well of Marasovac. This wooden bungalow has been adapted for hiking purposes by members of the mountaineering society HPD Paklenica from Zadar. The water is obtained from the Marasovac water well.
Vaganski vrh
Vaganski vrh is the highest peak of Velebit. The crown of the peak is actually a wide flat ridge covered in thick grass, so it does not leave the impression of being the highest peak. It takes around 20 minutes of easy hiking to reach the littoral edge of the peak, and this walk is worth taking for the view down the vertical rocks into the area of Velika Paklenica. / View: The view from the peak is oriented towards the region of Lika, and the site of Sveto brdo can be seen particularly clearly. / Seal: Metal seal is next to the marking of the peak.
Mountain shelter Ivine vodice
Mountain shelter Ivine vodice is a single-storey facility made of masonry, with one room and a wooden attic. There is a water cistern with drinking water nearby. Due to its location half way between Paklenica and Sveto brdo, and due to its good position next to the water and forest, the shelter is a suitable place to rest, get water supplies or spend the night during a tour of the highest peaks of Velebit. Sleeping bag and sleeping mat are needed for overnight stays.
Sveto brdo
Sveto brdo is the most impressive peak of Velebit and the final high peak in a series of peaks rising above Paklenica. It is the second highest peak of Velebit – only 6 meters lower than Vaganski vrh. On the peak itself, there is a large metal cross and a plate with the Ten Commandments. / View: Due to its pronounced position, Sveto brdo offers a clear view of both sides of the mountain – the side facing the region of Lika, and the littoral side. / Seal: Metal seal is built into the rock approximately twenty meters northwest of the peak.
Mountain shelter Dušice
Mountain shelter Dušice is located in a picturesque area of former pastures called Dušice, below Sveto brdo. The entrance area serves as a small dining area. The shelter offers room for overnight stays of up to 12 hikers. Storage for fuel wood and other material is located approximately twenty meters away from the shelter. The facility has no water; however, there are two permanent water sources nearby. One water source is located ten minutes of hiking away from the shelter, in the direction of shepherds' dwellings at Dušice (to the left), with plate roofing above. The other water source is right below the dwellings, along the trail leading towards Sveti Rok.
