Itinerary description
The difficult here is mostly the hot you might get once you finish the decent. Only a couple of fountains overall, be sure to start well filled! The first part is undoubtedly the most fascinating and entertaining part of the journey.
From Santa Lucia (or Mt Fo') take the west side of the road and take the hike pointing to Passo della Futa. You won't reach it: as soon as you arrive at L'apparita, take the route in the forest and follow the route. It's all ascending toll Mt Gazzaro.
You can take two routes actually before reaching Mt Gazzaro: to the right it's the "official" via degli Dei, to the left there's a more difficult E1(A00) climb to the top of Mt Gazzaro. Not particularly difficult, but can be an issue if your backpack is huge (it shouldn't be!).
Either ways take you to the Osteria Bruciata. Turn right and continue your descending route for many kms, until you reach a fork between San Piero Sieve and Santa Agata.
Take the left for Santa Agata, it's a steep downhill route but you'll eventually reach the small town and its beautiful church. Be sure to stop at the Osteriola di Baldi and have a great meal!
From here, if you want to follow the Via Degli Dei *DO NOT FOLLOW* the GPS track from now on, since it will take you to the Lago Bilancino, preceeded by Convento Bosco ai Frati. At the lake, you can find few B&Bs for the night. Honestly, it might not be worth the extra steps but if you're into lakes and don't mind few extra km, then go for it. The Via Degli Dei simply ends at San Piero a Sieve.
