Itinerary description
General tips for the whole trip:
1. Your backback, if you'll stay at B&Bs, should weight less than 8kg water included
2. Shoes and socks are the most important gear for your journey. Be sure to have some medical stuff with you for foots and health in general.
2. Be phisically prepared: there are no technical difficulties, but foot, legs and knees could not be happy sometimes :) You should be able to handle at least 8h of hike with 1000 D+ to be mostly sure you can do it.
3. Always carry 2 to 3 Lt of water. There are lots of fountain till day 3, then just a couple each days.
4. Start early (before 8:00) in the morning, you will have more time to rest in the afternoon. B&Bs usually have breakfast around 7:00 or earlier.
5. Book in advance your stay. Even on October B&B and restaurants can be full, and you might have to spend the day looking for where to sleep or eat.
6. Doing this at the end of September is still hot during the day... You are warned!
7. Enjoy the local food! There are lots of restaurants, bars and so on and as of 2021 there are no "tourist traps" (except for Bologna or Firenze).
8. You can follow the GPS track or buy the printed guide: anyway, the route is extremely well labeled the first days, and then the more you are closer to Firenze the less the route is labeled. The last day you have to follow the GPS to reach the end... CAI Firenze, please improve the labeling!
---
Start at the Bologna Centrale train station. Go left and then right to take Via Indipendenza, that will take you to the Duomo. Now head towards Via Saragozza, that will take you at the foot of the hill where the San Luca Church will wait you.
From now on, you'll just have to follow the extremely well labeled roads: either look for "Via degli Dei" or "VD" signs, you can't miss them.
Now continue your journey headed for Casalecchio, you'll soon have to take a turn right, where you'll change from asphalt to terrain. It will be mostly like that until the end of the first day. You'll follow the river Reno, then you'll have a small uphill route to take just after the Oasi San Gherardo.
Now, the hike is pretty much easy. Keep in mind this GPS tracks follows the VD until a fork is taken to be headed for Badolo.
At Badolo, you can stop for the dinner and for the night, ready for the next day :D
