Velika Planina is a mountain area located less than 50 kilometers from Ljubljana, in a northeasterly direction.
It is the largest mountain pasture in Slovenia and the one that is highest, from 1,400 to 1,666 meters.
It spans the Kamnik and Savinjal Alps and is located above the Bistrica valley.
It is accessed from Kamnik. Once there, follow the signs for Kamniška Bistrica-Gornji Grad and you will reach the cable car park.
Once on top you have multiple routes on foot or you can take a chairlift that takes you up to an intermediate zone in Zeleni Rob or up to the Gradische.
In short distance you reach the top of the Simnovec and once there you have a general view of the valley with its typical houses of shepherds.
Try to go first thing because it is a very busy place and visited by both tourists and the Slovenians themselves.
There is a small chapel in the center of the valley that is well worth a visit. In some cabins, typical products and demonstrations of cheese and dairy products are offered.
There are a couple of restaurants where you can taste the typical mountain dishes, such as jota (fermented cabbage soup), ričet (a type of thick soup), goulash and sausage with fermented cabbage, žganci of buckwheat and štruklji with cheese.
