Simnovec - Velika Planina - Mala Planina - Bukovec - Velika Planina - Zeleni Rob - Simnovec

Velika Planina, literally "large pasture", is an idyllic karst plateau northeast of Kamnik, at an average altitude of 1500 m. It is the largest shepherds' village in Europe today, as well as one of the few preserved in the high mountains. The main settlement includes more than 140 huts characterized by the typical circular architecture and long roofs covered with fir boards. A cultural heritage that represents one of the major attractions in the heart of Slovenia. The fastest way to reach this fairytale place is to take the old cable car that leaves from Kamniska Bistrica, just 3 km from the end of the homonymous valley. Open all year round, it costs 17 € per person round trip, with a supplement of another 2 € for the possible chairlift that leads to Gradisce (1666 m), the highest point of Velika Planina. From the top station, walk along the right side along the wooded strip that borders the ski slope. The large spaces used for pasture leave free interpretation for the climb and allow you to avoid the classic service road that leads to Zeleni Rob (and which we will leave for the return). Going around the southwest shoulder of Mount Gradisce, at the sight of Velika Planina, you reach the first point of interest of the “Po Stopinjah pastirjev” (literally “In the footsteps of the shepherds”). This thematic path in 11 stages allows you to know the main peculiarities of the plateau illustrated in as many information tables. Back in the vicinity of the shepherds' village, a passage to the hill where the chapel of Marija Snežna (Our Lady of the Snow) stands is a must. After the short detour to the Veternica cave, inside the karst sinkhole, the ring ends in Zeleni Rob, a popular refreshment point. The suggestive complex that emerges on the right includes the tourist-style settlement. From Zeleni Rob you descend following the convenient service road that takes you back to the cable car station. A visit to Velika Planina is particularly recommended in early spring, when the crocus bloom creates one of the most spectacular natural events in Europe.
