Marked circular walk located in the Kamnik Alps - Savinja, Slovenia.
To get to the starting point of the route, two steps from Velika Planina, take the cable car in the Kamniška Bistrica valley (at 540 meters altitude) to Simnovec (at 1400 meters) and then take the chairlifts to Zeleni Rob (at 1600 meters). The cable car ride + car seats costs 21 euros, round trip.
Velika Planina is one of the oldest and largest grazing areas above 1200 meters in the Slovenian Alpine region, a limestone plain covering about 1000 hectares. This high plateau in the Alps is an exception to the forest that covers most of Slovenia, standing above the tree line. The grazing of cattle and the intensive exploitation of wood ended up making Velika Planina even fewer trees, and what is natural from 1800 / 2000 meters happens here between 1500 / 1600 due to human action for centuries. . The landscape is stunning and combined with the history and traditions of the place makes this a spectacular walk.
From the first point, after leaving the car seats in Zeleni Rob, several interpretive signs appear about the place and about the daily life of the shepherds, from milking the cows, grazing or making cheese. The first appears at the highest point of the route, at 1667 meters, at the top of Gradisce, a natural viewpoint where we feel all the harmony of Velika Planina.
In Velika Planina, the largest village, we find examples of traditional architecture, very typical wooden houses, and even a picturesque isolated chapel at the top, the Capela Maria das Neves. And cows and more cows, among which we wander. There is the possibility of having a meal in one of the houses - local food like porridge with pieces of meat, sour milk or cheese tasting.
The walk continues to Mala Planina, a neighboring village situated at a little lower altitude, also with traditional houses and cows. Velika means big, Mala means small.
On the way back, we pass through a forested area, with trees with branches shaped by the difficult weather conditions, especially wind. The weather around here changes frequently, so it is likely that along the way it will get cold and rain - as we were told.
A few small ponds on the way and always amazing views to the mountains on the other side of the valley with peaks over 2500 meters.
Upon arrival at Zeleni Rob, the starting point of the hike, we chose to go down to the cable car in Simnovec to extend the tour before returning to the valley where we had left the car.
This journey through the natural, cultural and spiritual heritage of Velika Planina was an excellent example of an Alpine herding culture that still survives.
Note: it is possible to avoid the trip - and payment - of the cable car by walking to Velika Planina; several options exist, some with more slope than others, but all of them with more than 3 hours of walking.
