Babic Sica - Staza Zviri theme path (path 1) - Zavizan hut - Velika Kosa peak (1622 m) - path 7 - Velebit Botanical garden - Zavizan hut - Trag Covika thematic path (path 20 - path 3) - Babic Sica

Zavizan is one of the most famous places in the Northern Velebit National Park, a natural border between continental and Mediterranean Croatia. At 1,594 meters above sea level, under the summit of the Vucjak, the mountain refuge of the same name is situated and the oldest mountain meteorological station in the country. Coming from Senj, or from the Adriatic coast, you reach Oltari and turn right going up an asphalted road of about 10 km that reaches Babic Sica, access door to the park with attached free parking. Admission: 30 KN on foot or 45 KN with car (for those wishing to transit 7 km on a white road to the base of the Zavizan Refuge). The Ztaza Zviri thematic path (Wildlife path) branches off to the left a few meters past the ticket office, alongside the service road. Once passed, it finally enters the undergrowth of fir, beech and dwarf pine. After about 2.5 km, after a short open stretch, you return to the woods, meeting a fork that also joins the destination. The original path would continue to the left, while to the right it rises up to the grassy slopes from which there are amazing views of the northern Adriatic and the Morlacca Channel (Velebitski kanal), a narrow stretch of sea that separates the coast from the Kvarner islands, Prvic and Rab. When you reach the saddle where the Zavizan Refuge rises, turn immediately to the right to climb to the top of Velika Kosa, one with many peaks (rugged, unusual and rocky) that characterize this chain. From the top, descend in the direction of the SO on a trail that is initially steep, from which it is possible to reach the Velebit botanical garden. Founded in 1967 on the initiative of dr. Fran Kušan, a professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry of Zagreb, currently hosts around 300 plant species. Shortly after its establishment, the surrounding area was named Zavižan - Balinovac - Velika Kosa Special Botanical Reserve. In the central part is the dolina Balinovačka Ponikva, around which develops a circular stone path. From here return to the Zavizan Refuge reaching the service road above. The refuge was built in 1953 on the foundations of the former House of Krajac, destroyed during the Second World War. Given its easy access, it is a good starting point for various mountaineering routes on Velebit and the surrounding peaks (Veliki Zavižan 1,676 m, Balinovac 1,601 m, Zavižanska kosa 1,620 m, Vučjak 1,644 m). The return takes place by making a circular ring along the Trag Covika path (In the footsteps of men), the second thematic itinerary, so called because it passes through old areas of residential settlements. From the refuge descend towards the SO for about 300-400 m. Scollinando on the left, with rapid zig zag, you reach the wooded area again. After a long stretch in the O direction, you deviate sharply to the right, towards the NE, following the signs for Babic Sica. Proceed for more than 1 km in the dense forest to reach a large clearing. Once crossed, take the forest road that leads back to the starting point in 2 km.
