Itinerary description

Like our other two versions of this hike, this one leads to spectacular views of the Cowichan Valley. From the summit of the hike, high on the side of Skidder Mountain, you will be rewarded by a view taking in the whole Cowichan Valley from El Capitan Mountain in the west to Mt. Maxwell on Saltspring Island in the east.

Unlike the other two versions of this hike the first section of the route leads you through a pleasant forest setting reducing hiking in the open along logging roads. The hike starts at the parking lot of the now closed A.B. Greenwell school.

This hike is best done in the fall when the colours are on the trees. It is quite exposed once you emerge from the forest at about the half way point, so if hiking in the summer, bring adequate water.

Be aware that you may encounter logging trucks.

The Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an American Volksports Assoc. rating of 3 B.

It is fall and here is an example of why the maple trees here are called "Big Leaf" - we did see bigger ones.

Invasive species alert!

I think this is a patch of Japanese Knotwood. This is an invasive plant and a real problem in the area.
