Itinerary description

The driver dropped me off at the beginning of the route. The planned route was to go up Pico d'Antonio (which is not a peak, but a very small settlement) and descend to Vila das Pombas. But at one of the intersections, I decided to go up towards Pico da Cruz and then follow the trail down.

It takes about 3 h to go to Pico da Cruz from the intersection of the 2 trails and then another 1-2 h to descend. It's a steep climb, but very beautiful. You will have a vie of the entire valley during the entire climb. After you reach the paved road, go to the left until you reach a small village. There you will find a panel indicating the way to Pico da Cruz.

The second part of the trail is mostly descent after a short climb to Pico d'Antonio. The trail will go past some houses (the Pico d'Antonio establishment), go a bit around the peak overshadowing them and then GO DOWN. DO NOT follow the path that goes straight forward! That is a mistake.

My suggestion would be to follow this trail in reverse. It takes about 30 min to 1h to go to Chez Hujo, where you leave the main road and go on the stone path. You can take a colectivo (a van for public transportation) or aluguer (similar to a taxi) to this point. Then follow in reverse up until Pico da Cruz. It should take about 8 hours. From Pico da Cruz village you can take a colectivo or aluguer back to Cidade das Pombas. The colectivos should run around 5-6 PM transporting the children back from school.

Trekking poles can be useful in some areas, especially if descending.
