Itinerary description
The natural space formed by the Albufera lake and its surrounding was declared Natural Park in 1986. With a surface of 21000 hectares, it belongs to 13 different municipalities: Valencia, Alfafar, Sedaví, Massanassa, Catarroja, Albal, Beniparrell, Silla, Sollana, Sueca, Cullera, Albalat de la Ribera and Algemesí.
From an environmental point of view three major units are distinguished:
-The Albufera lake
-The Marsh, occupied mostly by rice paddies
-La Restinga or sand bar that separates the lake from the sea
The levee, 30 km in length is occupied almost entirely by human urban constructions. Only a portion of the levee, known as the Devesa de l'Albufera currently maintains a well-preserved dune system.
The Devesa de l'Albufera is a narrow coastal strip of sand that forms part of the levee that in the Quaternary, closed the Gulf of Valencia leading to the Albufera. In the Devesa de l'Albufera, 10 km long and 1 km wide, we can find, from the sea inland, four ecosystems:
-The beach
-Moving dunes or first dunes
-Malladas or inter-dune depressions
-Fixed Dunes or second dunes
