Itinerary description

Mottee Stone and Miners Cross (This is really a circular route from the Avoca Bridge.
On one of our frequent visits to hike in Wicklow we did this walk with a family group. Our base was the Woodenbridge Hotel. We started at the Bridge in Avoca, passed up by the Church (where there is ample car parking), taking the left by the fork at the old School, down by the famous Handweavers, up to the Miners Cross, then on to the Mottee Stone and down the Miners Road to the White Bridge and back to Avoca. The Cross was erected in 1952 to commemorate the Miners of the Avoca valley, and it gives a spectacular base for the view of the Vale of Avoca. The Mottee Stone is a huge granite boulder, weighing about 150 tons, situated at a height of about 240m. It has Iron rungs embedded into the stone to act as a ladder, which allows you to climb the 2.4 metres to the top. Five counties surrounding Wicklow can be viewed from the rock on a clear day, while in very good weather the mountains of Wales can be spotted across the Irish Sea. There are several theories about the name Mottee, but none too credible. The area left following the Open Cast Copper mine activity is spectacular, like a moon landscape. All in all, it is a lovely route, and while challenging, not too strenuous. It is only for active hikers.
