Itinerary description
Campagne cremonesi, camminata tra Vailate, Torlino Vimercati, cascine Capri e Agnadello , all' inizio cercando di evitare il provinciale ho provato a passare per una cascina, ma cani liberi mi hanno costretto a tornare indietro
Since you have asked for the utmost Truth and Final
Teachings,
You should heed most carefully, and give your
full attention.
Sentient beings in the Three Kingdoms
Possess different Passion-Bodhis.12
Among them there are many kinds of egoism
And many types of behavior;
They have a myriad ways of ego-clinging.
To suit the minds of ignorant men,
The Buddha said, "All things are existent."
But in [the realm of) Absolute Truth
Buddha Himself does not exist;13
There are no practices nor practisers,
No Path, no Realization, and no Stages,
No Buddha's Bodies and no Wisdom.
There is then no Nirviil)a,
For these are merely names and thoughts.
Matter and beings in the Universe
Are non-existent from the start;
They have never come to be.
There is no Truth, no Innate-Born Wisdom,
No Karma, and no effect therefrom;
Sarpsara even has no name.
Such is Absolute Truth.
Yet, if there are no sentient beings, how
Could Buddha in the Three Times come to be?
For if there is no cause, there will be no effect.
Therefore Buddha says, "In Mundane Truth,
All Samsaric and Nirval)ic things exist."
In Ultimate Truth, manifestation and the Void,
Existence and non-existence,
Are the same, being one in "taste"!14
There is no difference, such as "this" and "that."
All Dharmas are two-in-one in the Greatness.
This is understood by those enlightened ones
Who see no consciousness but Wisdom,
Who see but Buddhas, and no sentient beings.
Who see no Dharma-forms, but Dharma-Essence.
Spontaneously a great compassion
THE HUNDRED THOUSAND SO!':GS OF MILAREPA
Flows out from their hearts.
Their powers and virtues ne'er decline.
They possess all merits and wish-granting powers.
They have realized all virtues and the Truth.
Oh, you ghosts and Devas here assembled,
[\Vhcn you approach the preachers)
You hear not the profound Dharma
But hark to pagan ranting;
\Vhen you reach the country of Ahbhira,
You do not visit wise men,
But go to mad instructors.
Wolves and foxes wandering in graveyards
Are frightened when they hear a lion's roar.
Should there be a gifted one in this assembly,
Through hearing this, my preaching,
He will in time be liberated.
Most joyful now am I;
May you also be gay and happy.
After singing this song, he said to the visitors, "The Buddha has
preached numerous Dharmas, commonly known as 'The Eight Thou-
sand Groups.' All these various teachings are given to different people,
in accordance with their needs and capacities. However, the [utmost
Truth is One] and the final destination [to which all paths lead) is
One. This sole, absolute Foundation [of all] is the unaltered [ unacted-
upon and untouched] real nature of being. By merely understanding
this Truth, one will not be able to liberate himself. He must proceed on
the Path. Only thus can he actually realize what he has understood. The
essence of the Path is the Two-in-One Voidness-Compassion, and
though there are myriads of different paths or doctrines, they all lead
to the Two-in-One Realm of Wisdom and Means, or the realization of
the non-distinction of the Two Truths.''15
Then the five Oakinis who had come to Milarepa the night before to
take the oath of Bodhi-Mind, rose from the assembly and, standing to
the left of the Jctsun, sang together a song of praise, "We See His
Merits":
Beneath the bright light in the sky
Stand snow mountains to the North.
Nigh these are auspicious pasture land
