Itinerary description
Good overnight hiking trail in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park
Start at Clingmans Dome, follow the Appalachian Trail towards the west for 1.9 miles.
Then down the valley onto the Goshen Prong Trail for 7.7 miles.
Up along the creek to join campsite 24 for the night (0.8 miles).
The second day, follow Rough Creek Trail (2.8 miles) to join Sugarland Mountain Trail and then climb up 4.8 miles to arrive on the Appalachian Trail and back to Clingmans Dome (3.5 miles).
Most of the hike is in the forest with some creek crossings. Open view on the valley from the Appalachian Trail. You will need a Backcountry Permit from the National Park Service. The first day is mostly going down but the second day is a hard climb back onto the ridge-line.
Trail is not from GPS but extracted from map so not 100% accurate.
