Itinerary description
We were waiting for a bus which should have taken us to the Alma Arasan area, we could either walk from there along the paved road or search for a ride. I have checked an app, yet there was no bus at 6:40 am. I couldn’t waste another half an hour and so decided to hitchhike, luckily we were given a ride for some gratitude.
Upon arriving at the pipeline, we had to hike either along a 3-4ft pipeline or walk on it. I decided to do the latter for the next 2.5 clicks (km). Walking another 1 km takes to the altitude of 2500m ASL where one finds Big Almaty lake.
The last time I was around the lake was back in late Jan early Feb, yet irrespective of the rather warm end of April, in the first week of May the lake is still partially frozen, though would assume that the ice is relatively thin. Guess one of the main reasons for the significant amount of precipitation we have had in late March.
I wasn’t tired as it took less than an hour and a half to hike to the lake, so after a quick snack and photoshoot session, we decided to proceed to the Space station.
After hiking 3-4 km and elevation gain of another 500m, my friend started to have severe headaches, apparently altitude sickness. So had to treat it promptly.
After 20-30 minutes we decided to continue, yet very gradually. So it took a while before we reached the space station @ 3335m ASL.
It was a hot day, and on the way back I saw people walking in shorts and t-shirts.
