Itinerary description
Beautiful yet a very simple day hike. Shared bus from Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) at 9am via Mountain freaks (40gel for return transfer per person).
The hike is very straightforward and doesn't require any guide. Just follow the trail all the way to the fortress.
On the way to the fortress there is a few places of interest to stop and marvel at. There is an abandoned village right on the trail which was fun to explore. Then there was a inhabited village with very old looking buildings and towers. There was a also a monastery along the way but entry was likely restricted. And lastly there are some mineral deposits/streams running through the trail which are very cool.
There is an option to return from the other side of the river/stream to see a mineral lake (Abano mineral) up close. We did that. The other side of the river is a bit less trodden but provides a different perspective.
Bus pick-up was at 4pm (we made it at 4.10pm but the bus waited)!
Also I recommend that you pack some snacks/lunch and have it at the top of the fortress. The views are amazing!
