Day 5 in the Bernese Oberland
The first 3 kms of this trek were not recorded as the GPS was giving wrong readings. This is probably because the valley of Lauterbrunnen is surrounded by vertical cliffs. I had to activate the Glonass option apart from the usual GPS one in the handset.
This track is recorded from outside the Trummelbach Falls, stunning 10 falls excavated by the water in rock in the eastern side of the valley. The way is up the valley, in a very gentle slope until it reaches Stechelberg. Fantastic views of the Breithorn. From there, westwards there is a step path that gains altitude until the small and beautiful village of Gimmelwald, Continuing northwards and keeping gaining altitude in less than an hour the famous village of Murren appears on the way. Both villages are vehicle free and the scenery is great. Worthy to roam a bit around.
From there, the last part of this trek will take a path westwards in order to reach Rotstock hut after another 2 hours. The path has great views: north to the Schilthorn, south to the Breithorn, west to the Sefinnefurge pass and the Gspalterhorn and east to the Jungfrau, Monch, Eiger and Kleine Scheidegg. This hut serves snacks and food, and it is possible to spend the night there. It is situated by a big cow farm. The only problem is that they charge money for the drinkable water. Just down from the hut there is a stream of water. The opposite side of the stream from the hut has an small affluent that will not be potentially contaminated from the hut itself. Also, the herd of cows in the valley seem to stay not up the affluent, so that water is most likely drinkable. In case, I added a chlorination pill and I had no problem at all.
