Itinerary description

The trek to La Fillette on the North Coast from St Joseph is via the Yarra River. It starts from the Ortinola Horse Farm in Acono St Joseph a trail leads steeply up the mountain via one of the El Tucuche Bench Trails. One point to note is that our Northern Range is a maze of numerous trails. Our first stop is at the Rest House where several trails come to a point. One of these trails leads to El Tucuche, another to Caurita Ridge, another continues Northwards to several others trails. One can turn right to continue to the Western Caura Valley. To the left is a trail that leads to Habio and Rincon Waterfalls. Today we divert off the trail that can lead to Las Cuevas via a hunters' footpath. This trail was discovered by mistake last year on a trek to Las Cuevas. Several of our front runners took this route. They eventually followed the watercourse downstream with the knowledge that all rivers eventually lead to the sea. What a treasure this watercourse is? According to the hunters last year, this course starts from the Caura Watershed Area to the South-East. Continuing downstream it is joined by several other steams from other watershed areas. While not difficult to transverse, it is long around 7 miles. There are numerous wading and plunge pools with cold emerald water to dip in. Also the course has cut into the rocks to create a number of gorges, lastly being the Yarra Gorge. This expedition is great preparation for another harder water expedition, the Madamas River and Valley.
