Hololo to Maracas

It is always a fascinating experience to hike from Port Spain and Santa Cruz over the hills to Maracas Bay. The journey, which starts from the bottom of Chancellor Hill, passes through the Botanical Gardens to Mt Hololo Road. The distance is approximately twelve miles and will take 6-8 hours to reach the Bay.

The first part of the walk up Mt.Hololo to where the asphalt road ends will take fifty minutes and is 434 metres or 1425 feet high. The trek to reach the top of the ridge called St Anns Peak (199 metres) will require an additional thirty minutes.

Mt Holo is an inviting place for a morning trek and the residents are always polite and friendly. A noticeable attraction is the brave agouti’s who run freely from yard to yard unconcern with the presence of man. Towards the crest, there are spectacular views of Cascade, Fondes Amande, Aripita, Chancellor, and the St Anns Pine forest. During the dry season, the area is venerable to bush fires and the pine trees preserve the forest and stop erosion which can lead to flooding. It is one of the best places to get an aerial view of Port-Of –Spain and the environments. The Queen’s Park Savannah originally named Paradise Estate donated to the people of Trinidad by Henri Peschier to be used as a recreation ground.

The historic Cedula of Population of 1783 by Spanish Governor Don Jose Maria Chacon granted permission for French Immigrants to open up estates and develop the country. The valleys of St Anns and Santa Cruz were all prime cocoa estates because of their close location to the capital. Santa Cruz known as Holy Cross Valley consisted of several estates called Pastora, Cantaro, Gasparillo, Little Couroucaye and Grand Couroucaye. Getting agriculture produce to Port of Spain was long and difficult because of the rugged mountains of The Saddle or La Silla. The preferred route was over Mt. Hololo and remnants of old mile post still exist.

In 1852, the government granted 1000 pounds for improvements to roads in Santa Cruz. In order to access an easier route to Port-of-Spain, a passage way constructed through the mountain of La Silla.

The trail descends into Santa Cruz on the Hololo Extention Road, and the second half of the journey continues to Santa Barbara Boulevard onto Gasparillo Road over the hills to Maracas Bay.
