Itinerary description

Paria Bay and Waterfalls is just one of the many scenic beaches on our north coast of Trinidad. However it's proximity to the waterfall and relative access makes it now the number one destination for hikers and nature lovers in T&T. The trail from Brasso Seco, a rustic and hidden village in the mountains, is relatively easier though longer than the one from Blanchisseuse. It is about 3 1/2 miles longer but the elevation changes are lest infrequent. In fact this is the perfect trail to ride a mountain bike on, as is the case in the dry season. This Brasso Seco trail is the widest most well-kept trail in all of T&T. It is also apparently a well-kept secret. Most Paria Bay lovers use the harder route from Blanchisseuse. I can only guess it's because of the many views of the ocean and it's breezes. The Brasso Seco trail passes thru untouched virgin forest on a bench trail made by slaves 200-300 years ago. This is the case of all of T&T bench trails throughout both islands. Brasso Seco is a window to some of the most pristine and rewarding locations in T&T. To the south is the steep ascent of the Lalaja ridge, which can continue unto the Guanapo valley and gorges. Also from the Lalaja ridge you can ascent to El Cerro del Aripo, the roof of T&T.Paste this address in your browser for a view of that trail.

To the east of Brasso Seco lies the Madamas river and valley. This is hikers' paradise with many trails and waterfalls. From the Madamas river you can hike and wade your way down to the ocean. Paste this address in your browser for a view of that trail.

Carrying an experience hunter and co-worker along on this trip was an enlightening one. He pointed out along the trail the numerous animal tracks passing's and feeding places. He showed us the different types of trees and not so obvious fruits the animals feed on. The forest then came alive in a more fulfilling and rewarding adventure.

Ok so my GPS battery ran out and the back up was dead as well. So the return is incomplete but along the same path. Going along slow on this trail gave enough time to enjoy what it has to offer. Usually this trail forms part of a longer hike and it is a place to make up time due to its relatively easy elevation changes. It's a place where we power thru. However on this hike we had persons of different fitness levels so we took our time. It would normally be rated as an easy hike. But based on the return making it 17 miles on a trail brings it to moderate for some.
