Itinerary description
Island Hikers and Fitness Walkers will host their annual Hike-a-thon beginning 6.30am at the sleepy village of Matelot and finishing at the Spring Bridge in Blanchisseuse.This annual event attracts a combination of various hike enthusiast from nature lovers,adventurers and athletes and allows one the opportunity to see the remote north coast beaches of Cachipa, Madamas, Grand and Petit Tacarib, Murphy Bay and Paria which are only accessable by hiking .Except for the nesting of the leather back turtles these beaches are mostly uninhabited and there natural beauty remains preserved .Along the way there is the option to take a brief stop at Madamas and Paria Bay and enjoy a refreshing cool-off at the rivers' mouth.
The trek is divided into three groups of fast ,medium and slow pace walkers and will take the average fit person between 6-10 hours to complete the 19.7 miles coastal journey. Each participant upon completion will receive a commemorative t/shirt, a medal, along with a host of goodies and refreshments.Last year Don Mendez completed the Hike-a-thon in a record breaking time of 3 hours and 44 minutes and he is looking forward to improving his timing .
The hike is rated 8 meaning very difficult and is not recommended for first time or inexperienced hikers who maybe unfamiliar with walking long distances and the exposure to heat exhaustion. Pre-registration is required to participate in the Hike-a-thon and transportation to Matelot and the return from Blanchisseuse will be provided. A St.Johns Ambulance team will be on standby to assist hikers at the finish line
