Itinerary description

Again this was an An Oige Hike lead by Kay. We went on the public bus from Dublin to the bridge outside the town of Trim. We stared our walk by visiting the birthplace of the Duke of Wellington and the Wellington Column erected in his honour. Not everybody knows that this famous Englishman, was really an Irishman, born in Trim where he went to school and started his Political career. From there we walked around the outside of the beautifully conserved Norman Castle dating from 1173. We didn't tour the inside of the Castle as our main plan was to do a nice open-air hike. In 1994, the castle was used as the setting of the film "Braveheart". Apart from the Trim Castle, the town has a Cathedral, many Churches, and in the area there are many the ruins of other Castles, hospitals, Abbeys, graveyards, and holy wells, all dating back to the days when the town was one of the most important in Ireland and the centre of political power. These ruins are scattered along the banks of the beautiful River Boyne, thus enabling us to have a nice easy walk of just under 10km. A truly beautiful area, well worth a visit.
