The Valley of the Lakes of Triglav or the Valley of the Seven Lakes is a glacial alpine valley. The valley itself is the result of the powerful collapse of the Slatna plate, while the formation of the lakes on the karstified soil was made possible by impermeable sediments. The Triglav Lake Valley, which has been protected as a national park since 1924, boasts varied terrain, interesting flora and fauna, fossils and alpine animals. The Valley is also known for its well-developed karst phenomena.

The route begins at the Zasavska Koča refuge. A long descent with a moderate slope allows you to explore the five remaining lakes that can be found in the valley of the seven lakes.

The third of the lakes, the first of the route is Zeleno Jezero, followed by Jezero v Levicah. below the Modwec. A little further on we will find the refuge of Koca pro Triglavskin.

A few meters later we find the. A small climb takes us to Planina Ovcarija and further on to Planina Dedno Polje.

A steep descent takes us to the Koca Planini pri Jezero refuge and the Jezercska Planina lake.

A forest track takes us through a beech grove to the bus stop on the Planina Bato road. The rest of the journey is more on the bus to Bohinjsko Jezero.

Although the lakes and ponds are more numerous, it is generally spoken of the seven Triglav lakes which are listed below. This is because the others dry out several times during the year.

The lake below Vršac (also called Podstenje Lake; 1,993 m above sea level, often frozen most of the year)

The swimming pool in Laštah (under the Zasavska koča na Prehodavcih hut, often dries up during the summer)

Brown Lake (150 m long, 100 m wide, 10 m deep)

Lake Verde (up to 2 m deep, green due to algae)

The Great Lake (also called Lake Ledvica, the largest of the lakes, 1,930 m above sea level, 300 m long, 120 m wide, up to 15 m deep)

The double lake (next to the cabin, at 1,685 m above sea level; when the water level is high, the two lakes become one)

The Black Lake (the warmest of the Seven Lakes; 1,319 m above sea level, 150 m long, 80 m wide, 6 m deep)

The waters of the highest lake under Vršac flow into the Soča valley and the Adriatic Sea. All other lakes are hydrologically connected and their waters flow into the Sava Bohinjka River and then into the Black Sea.

The Valley of the Triglav Lakes is also interesting for its flora. The upper part of the Valley is covered mainly with lichens, but the further you descend, the more flowers are found, also endemic.

The reddish limestones of the Jurassic contain fossilized shells of ammonites (Jurassic marine mollusks that began to become extinct 100 million years ago for unknown reasons) that measure up to 20 cm. The easiest way to see a fossilized ammonite in the rocks on the east wall of the cabin next to the Triglav lakes.

The valley of the Triglav lakes is also significantly marked by all the mountainous karst forms that are clearly visible due to the abundance of rain and the lack of soil and vegetation. The most common include bare graduated plates called lašti. Other interesting forms include limestone ruts and pavements several meters long, sinkholes, kotlics ("snow boiler", a kind of karrens), perched blocks, chasms and other phenomena.

Bathing or doing any other recreational activity in the lakes is prohibited. Do not leave permanent traces, that is, collect all the garbage from the mountain to dispose of it properly in the valley.
