Itinerary description
TREKKING LA GARCÍA. San Félix (Antioquia)
(ENGLISH, BELOW)

This route leads to one of the sites that in some way marked the development of the textile industry in Antioquia and its subsequent decline, as it leads to a dam and reservoir built by the textile company Fabricato in the 1950s.
Only memories remain of the once thriving textile industry in Antioquia. Brands like Fabricato, Coltejer, Indulana, Vicuña, Everfit, Pantex, Riotex and many others that gave notoriety and prosperity to the region now.... do not exist!
It only took a little more than 25 years for them to disappear due to the effect of globalization (on the one hand) and the clumsiness of the governments in power (on the other hand), who did not know how to protect it.
The route starts from the site called "Fabrica de Panchochas", which is a little more than 1km from the town of San Félix, in Bello (Antioquia), on the road that leads to San Pedro de Los Milagros.
To get to the site, it is as simple as taking public transportation at Terminal del Sur, Ticket Office 11 and traveling for about 40 minutes; At the site it is possible to have hot chocolate and empanadas, to start the route. The road leads to the "La García" dam, built in 1954 by Fabricato to meet the water needs of its factories located in Bello. Today, the dam is disused and the level of its reservoir depends entirely on the winter and summer seasons. The dammed waters do not feed turbines for generating electricity, so today the body of water is useful for the species of birds and other fauna that inhabit the place. The route runs through some forest pockets and its rich landscape is notable. If the day is sunny (like the one we fortunately had) it is possible to see the imposing Quitasol hill in the distance, and of course the north of the Aburrá Valley. It's worth it!
Halfway there, you must cross a small suspension bridge over the "La García" ravine and there find a patch of fir and eucalyptus hay, where we took a short nap, as the site invites you to rest and contemplate the surroundings.
For the return, the road takes us to the San Félix fire station and from there to the main road, to take a short asphalt route to reach the starting point.
This route, recommended if you are in Medellín!
