THE ROUTE: Today will be an intense day in activities, we will make a small trek through the Folgefonna glacier, after lunch, a class for the handling of the shovels, and make a quiet ride in Kayac by the Hardangerfjord.
We have breakfast and put all the warm clothes in the backpacks of the day, the van will go up to go down to the campsite where another guide awaits us that will take us to the glacier. Ana will rest and will only prepare the food for us.
We decided to go down from the cabins by a nice path that descends us between the birch forest and in front of other cabins on the slope. We see several stumps full of mushrooms, autumn is coming to the area.
The waters of the Hardangerfjord can be seen among the branches of the trees. We take photos of a great oak with numerous branches that rise up like tentacles. In addition to the fjord, on the other shore, we see the Folgefonna glacier.
A few hundred meters the van leaves us at the campsite where Tierra Polar has located a space for their kayak activities. They introduce us to today's guide, and we make beautiful photos of the fjord and a wooden pier.
We depart to a nearby jetty surrounded by bucolic wooden houses awaiting the arrival of the ferry, this one smaller than the previous ones and that will take us to the other side of the Hardangerfjord to continue by road towards the Folgefonna glacier.
It is a short and quiet crossing admiring the landscape. On disembarking we take the narrow and steep mountain roads with the van. The landscape changes completely right away, we enter the high mountain.
Soon we have in sight on the high mountains the three languages of the Folgefonna glacier. We stop to take photos of the tremendous place. The temperature change is noticeable and it will be necessary to wrap up.
We reach a recreational area where there are toilets and take the ski lifts and chair lifts to go up to the ski area that is now closed. It is one of the few places in Europe that you can ski in summer.
It is impressive to see how the tongue of the glacier slides down the mountain to the recreational area. There are large turquoise patches of ice, some white and others dirty because of the earth that drags the ice.
We start on the left of the recreational area looking for the small channel of a torrent. In the end we will not use the crampons since we will scarcely step on the glacier, we will go to an area where the ice has broken and a cave has formed.
For the mass of the glacier only allow excursions for more experienced people. We rise on some rocks and when taking height we have another vision of the tongue of the glacier in its high part, much more bluish and divided by the chairlift.
We also see that the lower part of the glacial tongue that reaches the recreational area has been covered by large white canvases subject to ice. Possibly to slow down the thaw due to the current temperatures.
We pass to the other side of the rocks to start descending towards the side of the glacier. The panoramas are impressive, the lateral wall of the glacial can measure more than fifty meters thick.
There is no clear path so we have to pay attention in the descent of the big rocks, we go in the direction of a small pond or lagoon produced by the thaw at the foot of the lateral tongue of the glacier.
As we approach the water and the ice walls of the glacier intensify its beautiful turquoise color. Above the cracks of the ice become apparent and tear the surface of the glacier. Apparently there is no danger.
As we approach, we see that it is not really a cave, but a kind of visor that forms the ice as it melts and falls into the lagoon. Here it must be about five meters thick and its fall is cushioned.
From the tiny beach we approach from the left, climbing a huge block of ice to contemplate the cave from this closest position. In the interior water the splashes of the drops that fall when melting are distinguished.
If we zoom in on the camera we see that a small jet and pieces of ice fall in the bottom, which indicates its rapid thaw, so that each day will change its structure and shape when the ice in the cave breaks.
Now we are going to surround the lagoon on the right with which we can get closer to the cave, we must do it with caution, first because we get wet and second because of the danger of collapse of the ice.
We take turns to photograph ourselves inside where, due to the light, the turquoise color of the ice takes different nuances, we must leave early so as not to get too wet. From within the accelerated thaw is perceived.
Susi decides not to enter the cave and wait on some rocks. Then we climb up the tongue of the glacier where the ice is hard and consistent, therefore the security is greater, allowing us to walk on it.
We undertake the return climbing again towards other higher rocks to obtain a wide panoramic view of the entire tongue of the glacier. We can see three expeditions that strung along the ice.
When arriving at the recreational area we see large pallets of salt bags that possibly use to lessen the thaw under the tarps. They have opened a huge hall for the operation of the chair lift. We close this short and spectacular excursion.
