Itinerary description

Staying in Coconuco I first thought there is nothing to do apart from the thermal bath but actually the nature around this calm and authentic village is amazing.

So I ask around and found three tracks I would like to share with you.

This track going to the river Cauca you will find mentioned in some touristic pages in the internet but yet again there is no information further on. I was lucky and the lady who worked in my hostel showed me this nice track. Bye the way she is selling quite tasty and cheap arepas in the street every day after four. Please say hello from Simone if you should buy some ;).

You start in the village and from there it goes first up and later you will walk a bit in the street. As the path crosses some fields be careful if there is electricity in the wires. At some points you need to cross barbwire but at all fences there are special points to cross. Closer to the lake you will cross farm where there might be dogs. So as usual a stick or stone can help. When you reach the river you can go also upstream for a bit. And if you are patient enough you might see trouts jumping out of the water.

We really enjoyed this walk. We did it as a side trip while we cycled from the hot springs back to Popayan - we left bikes in the care of the friendly cafe owner where we stopped for lunch. Scenery is beautiful and we spotted many birds, including an eagle. We struggled initially to find the starting point in the village (look for a paved side road rather than a rougher track) but everyone we asked was friendly and encouraging about doing the route. Thank you for fine afternoon!
