Itinerary description

Description:
6hr roundtrip to the top of the Meßnerin, with beautiful views on the "Grüne See" and the central massif of the Hochschwab.

The trek:
Starting point for this trip is Tragöß-Oberort. After entering the village, follow the road to the right in the direction of Haringgraben (there is a little sign saying Meßnerin) for a couple of 100 metres out of town until you reach a parking lot.

Cross the little river over the bridge (following the sign for trek 844) and head straight up, there is a little path, not very well marked. Once you found the entry the path is very easy to find and well signed. The climb is quite exhausting but very easy terrain to walk on, no previous experiences needed. For the most part you are protected from the sun by trees, only at the end you leave the forrest.

Once at the top you can decide to either take the way down you came or finish the circuit. The entry to the circuit trek is very hard to find. We had to scramble down through the gras for a bit until we hit the path again. For easier orientation I highlighted the path in the photo. From then on it was easy again to find and less steep than the way up. After passing the Pilsteiner Alm (only a small builung, no food or water here) a little dirt track starts that joins with the road to Haringgraben about 3km before the end.

Once back at the parking lot you can go visit the Grüne See and if you dare go for a swim (6°C water temperature), very refreshing and the lake is absolutely beautiful.

When to go:
The Grüne See is a lake of melted glacier water. The water is highest in late spring/early summer and later its not much more than a mudpool. Highly recommend to go in early summer, which is also better in terms of temperatures.

Fees/Permits:
The parking lot at the Grüne See costs 3€/day and car. No fees otherwise.

Where to stay & eat:
There is no place to buy food or water on the trek. Except for the stream at the parking lot and about 4,5km before the end of the trip there is no watersource.

Equipment:
We walked the trek with regular running shoes. No problems there.

Dangers & Annoyances:
The is no shade at all near the top. Plan your rests accordingly.
