The West Highland Way is one of Britain's most famous long-distance footpaths. A 156 kilometer route from the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort Williams through some of Scotland's wildest and most beautiful natural scenery. A green, watery, desolate and mysterious land. We find endless, bare mountains and valleys of glacial origin from which water seems to flow continuously. And in the middle of it all, presiding over the atmosphere, a strange feeling of loneliness and nostalgia under a gray and rainy sky, which has marked the physiognomy and character of this land.
As with some other great trails - see the Camino de Sant Jaume - the West Highland Way, in addition to having a scenic value, also has a historical value that transforms the experience into something more than the pleasure of walking. The WHW actually runs on the track of an old military track, built by English troops to quell ongoing rebellions by the Scottish Jacobite clans. The Jacobite Highlanders were definitively defeated on 16 April 1746 at the Battle of Culloden, largely because of all the troops and artillery that the English had moved north using this track, along which the Highland Trail runs today .
We do section 7, from Altnafeadh to Kinlochleven, one of the most interesting of the whole route and easy to ride in a private vehicle.
START AND PARKING
We leave the car at Altnafeadh on the A82 road from Glasgow to Fort Williams. And another vehicle needs to be left at Kinlochleven, about 25 minutes' drive away.
ITINERARY
There is no possible loss. The path is very well marked and signposted and you often find hikers (almost everyone heading north).
When leaving, start climbing to pass the pass between the two sides of the mountain (WP04). Once at the top, the mountain becomes even more barren and it starts to rain. We plan, go up and down in a continuum until the point WP06, which the path, decidedly, pulls down, towards sea level.
When we reach the bridge (WP07) next to the reservoir, we have almost reached the bottom level. Now we just need to pass by an installation of six water pipes (WP08), reach the Hydroelectric Power Station and the Camping (WP09), at the entrance to the village, where we end the WHW walk .
A small taste of WHW that leaves you wanting to do everything else.
