Itinerary description
Poggio Buco is on the small plateau of The Sparne, right in the middle of the river Fiora valley, north-west from Pitigliano, on the road towards Manciano. Being in a dominant position towards the Fiora River, Poggio Buco was a very important Etruscan settlement.
We start the walk in a clearing along the SP 74 between Manciano and Pitigliano, at the bridge over the Fiora. We park at the beginning of the path or across the river, for example at the trattoria La Capannella.
We cross the bridge and take a dirt road on the left with red markings of the Tuscan walking network (path 002 towards Manciano and directions Poggio Buco).
At a junction with directions Az. Agr. Vadel s.r.l. Albinia we turn left, pass a metal gate and enter the private area of the Azienda.
We reach the graves of the necropolis, the necropolis di Poggio Buco.
The Etruscan necropolis is crossed by a long Via Cava where we can see the oldest pit tombs (a fossa). There are also bell-shaped tombs, carved into tufa with vestibule and hallway access (VII, VII century B.C). Unfortunately, the graves can no longer be visited, except for the Tomb of the Queen with impressive columns.
