Itinerary description
A beautiful weather for today's long ascent to Monte Moro Pass. For the first time during the tour, we had the best view of Monte Rosa. If you plan to reach Saas Fee directly from Macugnaga without using the Monte Moro cable car or a bus from Matmark or Saas Almagel, you will reach destination late without having the possibility to discover Saas Fee, another beautiful swiss town similar to Zermatt. For this reason, we decided to make the climb to Monte Moro Pass and spend the night at the excellent Rifugio Oberto Maroli at 2796 m. The ascent is long and sternuous (1500 m continuous ascent). The last 300 m ascent are particularly difficult: no clear trail with snow covering the rocks partially. Arrived at the refuge, we still had a lot of time so we continued our way to Saint Mary Statue (Madonna) at the Moro Pass, the border between Italy and Switzerland. The way up to the Madonna is on wooden and metallic stairs secured with safety ropes. The sceneries from the top are breathtaking, having Monte Rosa massif from the italian side and Mattmark lake and dam from the swiss side. We went back to the refuge to spend the night there.
