Itinerary description
This was such an incredible hike with so much variety in scenery, terrain, and cultural wonders. You begin the hike with a 12 minute ascent up a gravel road toward Tossal Gross. Once you arrive at some abandoned beehives you make your way back down again on a rocky path which leads to a pine forest where you can enjoy the shade for 3 kilometers. Toward the end of the forest path you will find an old stone ruins which you can easily miss if you don’t look back towards the trail. Next you arrive at a dry riverbed (River Gorgos) and continue along the riverbed until you connect with a path that leads to a large fortified house of Benitzaina and its hermitage which was built in the 18th century and declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1996 and sits of the border of Denia. The small chapel next to it is the Hermitage of Saint Antonio Abad and sits on the border of Javea which has caused controversy between the two municipalities. You pass through 1.5 kms of paved roads of vineyards, almond trees and old carob trees until you reach Vall de Cavall where you will see a beautiful white ceramic sculpture of a sitting horse in front of stables and the livery yard that is home to over forty horses. The final ascent to Tossal Gros is straight, steep and rocky so it’s advisable to use a walking stick. It is well worth the ascent as the views from the summit are spectacular - the Montgo, Cumbre de Sol, Saint Antonio, the bay of Xabia, Denia, the Calp rock, Olga, and the Sierra Bernia. After making your way to the tower you come down and turn toward the Gata quarry and then through the Los Fonts Urbanisation and on to Cami de Teulada which completes this circular route.
