Itinerary description

This hike will take you up and through a large cypress mound called "Blues Head" by the locals. It will then take you out to the St Johns River area and back through a smaller cypress mound called "Little Blue" and than back to the parking area. I did this hike in April of 2009 and everything was pretty dry. This hike, nor the area in general, is recommended to visit in the wet season. If you know there is water anywhere in Tosohatchee, don't consider this hike unless you like to get wet and muddy! There is a trail leading up to the area, but then you are on your own (you can download my tracks and try following them). The area is quite grassy around the mounds, but because cattle use the area you can normally find trails leading through the grass. The cattle are pretty much harmless, you avoid them and they will avoid you! When I was there there was an active Bald Eagle's nest in "Little Blue" - a young eagle was bouncing around way up there in the cypress tree, with the parents flying around watching me. The views of the river certainly are worth capturing on you camera,so bring it along. Binoculars are always a handy thing to have out there. The hike will take you within view of RT50. There were many airboat tours active the day I was there also. Park at parking area #24 on the Powerline Road. Remember - take nothing but photos and leave nothing but footprints! Happy trails.....
