Tongariro Track - Tongariro Alpine Crossing (Winter) 2016-08-17 7:53
(Català - English summary)
If you have a single day to walk, everyone advises you to do the Tongariro Track. They say that one of the best treks of a day in the world. In winter it loses spectacularly, since much of the landscape becomes white and the blue and blue lakes disappear under a whitish bath. But it's still a great ride that you have to do in good weather and with the right material.
The next day promised good weather, we arrived a few minutes before closing the e-site for information, but I could enter the group that they had prepared for the next day with mountain guides, equipment and transfer to the starting points and return (because it is not circular).
Despite being in winter, it only requires a minimal physical fitness and some mountain experience. We were twelve walkers and three guides, who provided us with the additional material we needed (in my case crampons and helmets, others had no boots, no leggings, no backpack ...) and some quick but interesting and clear lessons about how Use the helmet in case of falling by ice or snow.
The first section seems to be easy, but in the middle of the route it is clear that without crampons and helmet can not be done. On the other hand, one of the guides confirmed the winter trace is not the same as the one in summer (I had a GPS trace and I saw that sometimes we diverted), he told me that in summer it can be done in 4-5 hours, but in winter it takes 7 or 8 hours. You have to bring water, because you can not drink the one that we will find on the road, totally contaminated by minerals.
Like other times in NZ, it is a path of contrasts: you begin to look like the desert, then go through high mountains, crossing sulfur fumes and finish in a jungle area.
A great day, in which I was lucky to be accompanied by a young couple living in Madrid in Javi and Miriam - a pleasure to share it with you! -. Your snow fall can be seen in the video.
Health and Legs !!

Winter lost in spectacular, because much of the landscape turns white and blue and emerald lakes disappear. But it is still a fantastic way to do with good weather and suitable material.
Despite being only in winter it requires a minimum physical competence and some mountain experience. We were twelve and three walking guides that they provided additional materials needed.

I did this hike in the end of October. The day was cloudy so we could not see too far on the top but nevertheless incredible experience! After passing the highest point the crater lakes area had beautiful vistas and the hike in the rocky desert inside clouds was quite an experience too. The path is easy to follow and there are toilets in many places by the track.
You have to be wary of the weather, check the forecast. With hard wind or rain they don't recommend doing this hike. The wind up on the mountain is freezing so dress accordingly.
Excellent comments Hege M! Thank you very much for your contribution. It really is a trail of the best and most complete in the world ;-)

I did it with a Tongariro Reserve guide as it was end of winter season and track closed because of snow and ice. Awesome and amazing landscape! I did not find the track difficult despite the 2 hours of ice walking with crampons and ice axe...
Hi Joseja Écija, la verdad és que la ruta debe variar mucho de hacerla en época de nieve a verano, yo llevaba un track de verano y nos desviamos mucho ;-)
Salut i Cames!!
Hi mooneti. We also went with guides. Fantastic experience!!
