Itinerary description
This is up there with one of the best hikes I have ever done.
4 days, 3 nights, absolutely stunning scenery and a fantastic experience.
I cannot do it justice in describing the days, so have a read through the official website here - https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/central-north-island/places/tongariro-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/tongariro-northern-circuit/
My summary is -
- Day 1 - short, easy, intro to NZ bush with big snow capped mountains in the background.
- Day 2 - long, steep, involves climbing 2 active volcanos, one is a scree slope climb, the other a normal trail, you walk on ancient lava flows, and the scenery just pops !
- Day 3 - mountains in the background, open ridges, vegetated gullies and lovely streams. the end of the day you can ahve a swim in some seriously cold water !
- Day 4 - you walk between the main peaks of Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe, visit some emerald lakes and bask in amazing views.
This is a hard walk, purely due to the elevation gain and distance covered. It can be very cold and you should follow all advices on the DOC website.
It is a great walk !
