They describe it as the best 1-day route in New Zealand and it's no wonder. Also, after doing it, you can say that you have spent a whole day in Mordor.
The route runs through volcanic terrain between cones, craters and sulphurous fumaroles. As in the rest of the natural parks of New Zealand, the route was very well marked and very well conditioned. You have to take enough water because you can not drink the water from the streams (it contains a lot of sulfur).
The route is not circular, but there is a bus that takes you to the starting point to pick up the car (for the modest price of $ 25). Depending on the time of year, there may be plenty of snow.

Ahora, Feb 2013, la ruta es circular, porque de actividad volcánica. Aún eso, nos distfrutamos mucho. La ruta era hermosa de Whakapa a Red Crater. (Poco español, lo siento).
Now, 2013, the route is circular, an out and back because part of the route has volcanic activity. WE were not disappointed, as the route from Whakapapa and back was spectacular, and the return ride shorter.

Mooie tocht die voor (bijna) iedereen te doen is.
Enkele pittige stijgingen en spectaculaire dalingen in een prachtig landschap.
