Itinerary description
Not difficult for an intermediate hiker. First kms have beautiful views. The Red Crater and the Emerald lakes are amazing. From there to the Ketetahi parking lot (about 10kms) the trail has nothing special, really long and boring. Forest the last few kms and a river to refresh your feet.
Cell coverage most part of the trail.
I would recommend to hike just the first part from Mangatepopo car park to the Red Crater / Emerald Lakes and back. The problem is that Mangatepopo parking has a 4 hour limit. You don’t need any shuttle for this, but you have to be really fast. This is definitely the best option if you don’t find a shuttle to do the entire 20km crossing.
There is free parking and not limited in time at the end in Ketetahi road, but the trail from there to Red Crater is harder and as I said not very nice.
