- This challenging trail begins at 1120 m, climbs the Mangatepopo Valley to the saddle between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, passing through the Southern Crater before ascending again to the Red Crater, the highest point of the crossing in 1886 m.
- You will then descend on a trail of volcanic rock to the vivid Emerald Lakes, known as Ngarotopounamu (green lakes). After passing through Blue Lake, also known as Te Wai-whakaata-o-te-Rangihiroa (Mirror of Rangihiroa), the trail follows around the northern slope of Tongariro, then descends on a zigzag trail and heads to Ketetahi Shelter in 760 m.
- Be prepared for a long and challenging day.
