The best known day route in New Zealand, on the north island. Very famous also for having been location (Mordor) for the shooting of The Lord of The Rings and the Hobbit.
Tongariro National Park. Free access, it was not necessary to obtain permits. You can hire buses that take you from the end to the beginning of the route.
The route has no loss, very well marked. Only in case of doing it with a lot of snow the GPS can be useful.
There are no technical difficulties (in summer), except for the logics derived from the accumulated differences. You have to bring enough water (no fountains) and warm clothes, even with good weather up there was cold and windy. There are signs that warn of possible volcanic activity and that in case of risk, indicate that it must turn around at that point. You can check the status on the official page of the park.
It is a very cool route, spectacular stretches of volcanic landscapes, craters, lakes, fumaroles ...
As in the rest of PN, they do not allow to leave the marked routes.
The only downside that I found, and not minor, is the amount of people there, possibly due to the good day that appeared. In sections it looked like a pilgrimage, a bit overwhelming. But still worth it.
