Itinerary description
In short one of the great walks of the world. Start at Mangatepopo Carpark and walk up the valley to the Devils Staircase. Climbing that and a further steeper climb you get extraordinary views of Mt Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. You find yourself at the edge of the Red Crater so named for its iron and mineral deposits and then climb down steep scree to the vivid Emerald Lakes. Next its the tempting Blue Lake before a descent with amazing views of Lake Taupo to Ketetahi Carpark. A transformative experience. Allow all day and go equipped with water, food, first aid and warm gear! Challenging in parts.
