Itinerary description
Tobacco Gulch Trail begins as a branch off of the Balderson Trail. It is primarily an equestrian trail but hikers use it occasionally too. The trail begins along an abandoned forest service road that has encroaching manzanita growing upon it so it doesn't really seem like a road. A spur trail (see Camp Virner Trail) leads up to a restaurant. Shortly after the spur trail the trail descends as a true single track trail winding through some well shaded sections and then through some thinned forest. Eventually the trail continues along a road for a bit, before descending again to Rock Creek as a single track. No motorized vehicles are permitted on this trail. Two trees need to be cut out of the trail-one with a bow saw and the other with a chainsaw, otherwise the trail is in good shape. Most OHVers seem to respect the non-motorized designation of this trail--probably because the signs are apparent.
