Cross road, walk alongside the final section of the Military Canal. Reach track, go R with it across bridge then L. Keep forward at junction, ignoring bridge L. Just before cliffs (which once rose above the sea), go L over bridge, ignore one R, go forward over another. Soon pick up semi-surfaced track (Panel Valley Hide, L, worth visiting). Cross gated bridge R, immediately go R, swinging L. Continue uphill to fingerpost. Turn L through gate then R to stile. Go L to gate; cross lane to another. Go to R-hand field corner to obscure stile, fenced path and two more stiles. Follow R field-edge, follow it L, go R at gap to road-junction.

Follow 'Icklesham' sign. At sharp corner go R over stile. Pass Hog Hill Mill (which houses Paul McCartney's recording studio], reach road. Turn L. Cross stile at corner. Keep forward. At fingerpost, fork L. Soon after 2 benches, leave fence and go diagonally R to road. Go R, soon L over stile along R field-edge then R of Wickham Manor (once the home of famous Quaker, William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania). Cross track, veer gradually L (see remains of Winchelsea New Gate R). Soon after gate, climb bank aiming for 2 stiles along R field edge. Go diagonally L to ruin and road.

Cross the road, go R. Follow the road into town passing the public toilets. After the New Inn, go R down the next road L passing the Town Well and Armoury. Go R and R to main road.

Cross, turn L down steps, around Strand Gate, downhill. At junction go R then fork R. Go R at fingerpost along Canal. About 200m after squeeze stile, go L to bridge. Continue to gate in next field, veer R to another. Now make for sea-wall keeping ditch R. Through two gates to road.

Go R, up ramp to sea-wall. You now have choices; remain high along wall, go along shingle, or sand. Eventually join road with beach houses R. Go R at barrier past Emergency Coastguard, L past Smugglers Pub to return to car.
