Itinerary description

This hike combines a visit to the beautiful ancient city of Tlos with an easy walk in the surrounding countryside at the foot of Saklikent Milli Parki.
The route starts from the parking lot and the restaurant area and first goes past the acropolis and to the top of the castle. The entrance fee for adults is 60 Turkish Lira (end of 2023)

Tlos.
Tlos, an ancient Lycian city nestled in the picturesque countryside near Fethiye, Turkey, stands as a testament to the rich history and enduring legacy of the region. This archaeological treasure trove boasts a compelling blend of myth, history, and natural beauty, captivating visitors with its ancient ruins and stunning landscape.

As you approach Tlos, you're greeted by the imposing sight of the acropolis perched atop a rugged hill, commanding a panoramic view of the surrounding valley. The city's strategic position allowed it to prosper as a key center of trade, culture, and power in ancient Lycia.

Wandering through the ruins, you'll encounter remnants of a once-thriving civilization, including the well-preserved remains of a theatre, agora, and Roman baths. The theatre, with its weathered stone seats and sweeping views, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of performances that once entertained the city's inhabitants.

At the heart of Tlos lies the striking Lycian rock-cut tombs, carved into the sheer cliffs overlooking the city. These elaborate burial chambers, adorned with intricate reliefs and inscriptions, serve as a poignant reminder of the Lycian people's reverence for the afterlife.

Legend intertwines with history at Tlos, as the city is believed to be the birthplace of the mythical hero Bellerophon, who famously tamed the winged horse Pegasus and defeated the Chimera. Ruins associated with Bellerophon's exploits, such as the remnants of a fortress atop the acropolis, add a layer of intrigue to the site.

Beyond its archaeological significance, Tlos captivates visitors with its natural beauty. Surrounded by verdant countryside and framed by rugged mountains, the city offers opportunities for scenic hikes and exploration. The nearby Saklıkent Gorge, with its towering cliffs and crystal-clear waters, provides a refreshing escape from the heat of the day.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking an immersive cultural experience, Tlos beckons with its timeless allure and captivating charm. In every crumbling stone and whispering breeze, the echoes of ancient civilizations resonate, inviting you to uncover the secrets of this storied city.

After walking this beautiful route past the rock tombs, we will take a walk through the countryside on very easy paved and unpaved roads. These are mostly very quiet country roads so we will not encounter any traffic.
We get a wonderful insight into local life and will see that there are quite a few trout farms in this area. Along the way we often have views of the snow-capped peaks of Saklikent Milli Parki and the ancient city of Tlos.
When we return to Tlos we visit the area of the theatre and the church and baths before we return to our starting point.

Disclaimer.

I have personally performed and then downloaded the route described, along with the track and waypoints, based on my personal experience. However, it is important to note that these should be considered as general guides and not precise instructions. Trails may not always accurately represent the exact itinerary due to factors such as weak satellite reception during GPS recording, especially in areas with ravines, deep gorges, dense forests, and similar conditions. Furthermore, the situation of the hiking trails may change over time, meaning that the descriptions given no longer correspond to the current situation.

It is the sole responsibility of the individual undertaking these trails to take appropriate safety measures, which should be tailored to the specific difficulty level and be in accordance to the prevailing weather conditions. Additionally, it should be realized that one's technical and physical preparedness play a crucial role in ensuring a safe hiking experience.

I strongly recommend hiking with a companion when venturing into the mountains. Always inform a friend or family member of your itinerary and estimated time of return. Ensure that your phone has a sufficient battery charge, and carry an adequate supply of water, food, and appropriate shelter for the season and the chosen route.

Please commit to leaving the natural environment as pristine as you found it, or even better. This way, we can all continue to enjoy the beauty of these trails, leaving behind only the traces of our footsteps.
